There are few people who would dare suggest that the Wet’suwet’en nation is not a matrilineal society, (also called matriliny, group adhering to a kinship system in which ancestral descent is traced through maternal instead of paternal lines (the latter being termed patrilineage or patriliny). So foolowing the mothers lineage is how both the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en determine who will be the hereditary chief. Today Violet Gellenbeck posted the following.
“My great- grandfather, Mooseskin Johnny, and his wife Teresa, who was Gitksan, ran a hotel, where the workers used to stay.there was a picture posted on this page, a while back. That showed where the hotel stood, you see the tops of the building our Mom Ghu’he’ always had wonderful stories of her Granmother Teresa.”
If indeed this matralineal rule is true, then Violet just proved her family, all of the Bazil’s are Gitxsan and not Wet’suwet’en.
Violet Gellenbeck is one of the daughters of Lucy Bazil and grew up in Smithers, she is an active promoter of the Wet’suwet’en Chiefs and was involved directly in the stripping of titles as well as influencing the choice of replacement chiefs, in a direct conflict with traditional protocol. She was also instrumental in the writing of a local historical book “Ways of Our Ancestors” that seems to be more about PR than actually following the rules laid out inside the book. In the words of Lucy Rose Verigin (nee Bazil) Violet Gellenbeck’s mother completely contradicts Violet’s version of history, inclusive of her input into the book Shared Histories. Violet plants the seeds of race hate where formerly there was so much less of that going on.
Both books are written with an objective of laying a guilt trip, “so no one will stand in our way when we make our demands”.
Is it a coincidence that her only son was pretty much given a free ride absolving him of the incident in Moricetown (Witset) where he was brutalizing salmon he caught at the entrance of a fish ladder that was there to save salmon and increase their population. Brutal abuse of Salmon during a time when they are in crisis and Aboriginal Injustice – Subverting Aboriginal Law John Ridsdale was the one who said “Chief Na’Moks said the nation decided to suspend him from the Moricetown Canyon. “We came up with the idea to keep him out of the canyon because number one to teach him a lesson so, he never forgets and never does it again and also the fact that he needs to learn respect for all animals”, said Chief Na’Moks, who added this situation is a rare occurrence.”
Right, and for how long? This was a thank you for doing the dirty work that had to be done right John? This happened in Aug 2019, now compare that to the other video (June 2016) below and ask who owes whom a back scratching?
See it with your own eyes, she had no problems with entering the hall to condemn Gloria George, and allowing Warner Naziel to wear the Smogelgem blanket even before Gloria was stripped of the title, what kind of woman with any credibility would stand for something like that? Is this an example of a respected matriarch? Watch the video, do they even look pained for what they had to do?
They went to the Unist’ot’en Camp and celebrated what they did.
