Almost a complete NO SHOW for the rally for Adam’s appearance in the B.C. Supreme Court (regarding the poster)
Let me begin by quoting CBC “The Crown alleges Chief Dtsa’hyl (Adam Gagnon), who is being tried by judge alone, seized and decommissioned pieces of Coastal GasLink’s heavy equipment, publicly defying a court injunction to stay away from pipeline construction. ”
Some very serious clarifications must be made, both Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en have laws that determine lineage, as they use matrilineal blood lines, the Gagnon family are direct descendants of a Gitxsan grandmother, making Adam Gagnon a Gitxsan with Wet’suwet’en relatives. The bottom line is he is Gitxsan.
The second very important issue is the name Chief Dtsa’hyl was not given to him following matrilineal blood lines, it was taken because he paid for it, and all names, even baby names are hereditary names, meaning that every name given to a Wet’suwet’en or Gitxsan is hereditary, but it does not make them one of the primary Wet’suwet’en Chiefs, there are only 13 of them and Adam is a sub-chief under his brother Alphonse Gagnon (Chief Kloum Khun) also a Gitxsan by birth and also did not follow matrilineal inheritance in acquiring his blanket of name.
The complete absence of the primary Wet’suwet’en Chiefs was noted. To be fair quoting CBC “His lawyer told the court that Wet’suwet’en matriarchs were present in the courtroom and that several Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs would be called later as witnesses for the defence.” So its clear they did a no show of support in front of the courthouse.
